The Worshipful Company of Tobacco Pipe Makers & Tobacco Blenders

A City of London Livery Company – Fellowship, Philanthropy and Education, Civic Duty

THE CLIENT
The Worshipful Company of Tobacco Pipe Makers & Tobacco Blenders is one of the City of London’s renowned Livery Companies. Promoting fellowship and philanthropy, and play an integral role in the governance of the City of London.

THE TASK
Design a website to present the livery company to a wider audience and to include a members only site.

THE SOLUTION
There are a total of 111 livery companies in the City of London with many people not knowing their function.

A livery company is a type of guild or professional association that originated in medieval times in London, England. Livery companies comprise London's ancient and modern trade associations and guilds, almost all of which are named the 'Worshipful Company of…' their craft, trade or profession.

They play a significant part in the life of the City of London – that is in the financial district and historic heart of the capital – not least by providing charitable-giving and networking opportunities.

Importantly, liverymen (members) retain voting rights for the senior civic offices, such as the Lord Mayor, Sheriffs and Common Council of the City Corporation, London's ancient municipal authority with extensive local government powers.

To reveal the mystery of the livery company, photography was art directed to show interesting views and details during official duties and ceremonies, banquets, lunches and other social events. The sense of people was important but without a specific focus on faces. The traditional robes, beautiful treasures and glorious interiors visually describe a feeling of being a member. Pages were created to feature the company and court, history, traditions and treasures as well as featuring their Benevolent Fund and charities they support. Ultimately, encouraging prospective new members to make an application.

The images and overall look and feel is recognisable to current members where they can log into a members area to access information and event details.
